Managing computer time
I'm pretty vocal about my views on kids and screen time, stopping just short of begging parents to limit it and encourage creative play instead. But what about us adults? Should we be allowed unlimited time in front of the computer or do we need to limit our time, too?
Plenty of studies have been done and most of them conclude that yes, adults are also spending too much time glued to the keyboard. But putting the experts aside for one moment, I want to share my personal, not scientific, observations on the matter.
Each minute or hour spent on the computer is less time spent with out families. For those of us that work or have limited time with our kids, the computer is cutting even further into our downtime. The computer also seems addicting, at least for me! I may plan to look up a recipe and next thing I know I have been exploring Pinterest for two hours!
There are health repercussions as well. No matter how ergonomic that chair is, sitting in it for a long time still isn't a good idea. We need to get up and move around. Plus, staring a screen isn't great for your eyes or neck either.
How do I limit my computer time? Even though I work from home, I still try to keep set work hours. Once I am done with work, the computer is off. If I do go on the computer later for fun, I set a timer and only allot myself a limited time. My main issue used to be e-mail. Most of my clients contact me via e-mail and their office hours are different than mine. My smart phone keeps me from checking the computer for new mail constantly. I can check it periodically no matter what I am doing without falling prey to screen-suck.
